Why fill artificial grass with sand?

Why fill artificial grass with sand?

The artificial grass developed by Royal Grass® for gardens is decorative synthetic turf with long grass fibers ranging in height from 25 mm to 65 mm. Such grass blades require support to remain upright. In products without a root zone (also known as moss thread), this is achieved with the help of a layer of sand approximately 2 cm deep.

Important: The sand filling we use to support the fibers or provide the mat with some extra stability is a natural and therefore clean product, namely river sand. Rubber granules are never used for our artificial grass.

Advantages of infill sand

The use of sand infill has several advantages. These advantages apply to all types of artificial grass, with or without moss thread.

  • One of the functions of the sand is to add weight to the artificial grass. The additional weight means that the grass stays in place and doesn’t need to be secured in any other way.
  • The sand provides stability and protects the turf. As a result, there are no creases or folds in the artificial grass upon use.
  • The sand surrounds the long artificial grass blades and ensures they remain upright.
  • An additional benefit of sand infill is that it makes the grass fire-resistant, for instance, if the barbecue is accidentally overturned on the grass.

Regardless of the type of artificial grass you choose, we always recommend using sand infill (except for indoor use). Ultimately, this will increase the lifespan of the artificial grass.

Sand infill makes your artificial grass appear more natural

You might not expect it, but filling your artificial grass with sand will truly enhance its appearance. Not only does the sand help keep the fibers upright, but brushing it in will position the fibers in various directions, improving the natural look. It slows down the process of the artificial grass laying flat.

Facts about sand filling

A special type of sand is used for artificial grass. You should not confuse this with soil. The sand is specially developed for this purpose.

  • The sand infill is clean and does not form a nourishing substrate for weeds
  • The sand infill does not absorb water, allowing your lawn to remain permeable to water and to dry quickly after rain showers. It won’t become muddy!
  • The sand is heavy and cannot be blown off the grass. You can also simply use a leaf blower to remove leaves from the lawn.
  • The sand will not run out of the grass; it is covered by the artificial grass fibers.
  • Children can continue crawling over the grass without being bothered by the sand, no stains, and no danger.
