“Establishment of Royal Grass®”
In November 2003, Royal Grass® was established as part of TenCate. As an introduction, Royal Grass® was presented to a group of 40 top gardeners from the Netherlands at Bomencentrum Nederland in Baarn.
2004
“The first artificial grass is laid”
After a boot camp for Royal Grass® dealers, the first gardens, roof terraces, central reservations and roundabouts were soon being fitted with artificial grass. The Telegraaf writes an Article on Royal Grass®, unwittingly ensuring Royal Grass®’s first steps in southern Europe. In fact, the Dutch people who lived there read in the Telegraaf that a really real-looking artificial grass had been developed! And since artificial grass needs no water and water is really expensive and scarce in southern Europe…
2005
“First grass innovation: the V-shape®”
Feedback from the first grass plants leads to the development of the V-shape in the blades of grass. These V-shape blades not only better resemble natural grass, but also ensure that the blades stay upright for longer during intensive treading, thus keeping the artificial grass beautiful for longer! The V-shape creates the first variations in the Royal Grass® collection.
2006
“Royal Grass® takes its first steps in the Middle East”
The first steps are being taken in the Middle East. Here, natural grass finds it really difficult to grow due to the warm climate and Royal Grass® is a great solution for that. In Ras-Al-Khaimah, one of the Emirates, the first gardens with Royal Grass® artificial grass are being installed.
2007
“Royal Grass® forges ahead on its own”
Through an MBO, Royal Grass® is leaving the TenCate Group and will continue to operate independently.
2009
“Royal Grass® makes strides in Australia”
In Australia, we also get to work with Royal Grass® artificial grass. The collection has been expanded with different types of artificial grass to meet the needs and requirements of the regions where Royal Grass® is installed.
2010
“Hej Scandinavia, Ciao Italia “
Royal Grass®’s dealer network is expanding from the wonderful Scandinavian countries to sunny Italy.
2015
“New grass innovation: the Realistic Directional Yarn®”
The revolutionary ReaDY® (Realistic Directional Yarn) technology is invented and launched by Royal Grass®. Like real grass, each blade of grass has its own direction where it points, making our artificial grass look even more natural.
2018
“Take Back program in The Netherlands!”
Artificial grass that is not recycled often ends up in the plastic waste heap or is illegally dumped abroad. Freek Verhoeven: “We have a duty to ourselves, our children and our children’s children to ensure that we handle our waste responsibly. As a market leader, we take our responsibility seriously and we have introduced the Take Back program in the Netherlands”. We have placed containers at various dealers around the country to collect obsolete Royal Grass® and cutting waste for subsequent recycling at a specialist recycler. The precious raw materials are used to make new products. Sice 2018 we have started our Take Back program across the Netherlands. It has already been expanded to Belgium too.

“Royal Grass® becomes even more recyclable”
Royal Grass® introduces: the REBel! REBel is a combination of the double ecobacking, with which Royal Grass® has been working with since 2011, with an additional stabilisation grid and a transparent coating. This backing makes it even easier to install Royal Grass® and its unique composition makes Royal Grass® even more recyclable. Half of the collection is currently being fitted with this updated ecobacking. In the future, the entire collection will be equipped with the new REBel backing.

“Hello Happiness, Hello Royal Grass®”
“In 2001/2002, I lived in the US for a while for my then job, at a major synthetic turf fibre manufacturer. Here I saw that in mainly dry places, sports field-quality artificial grass was sometimes laid in gardens. This was there because due to water scarcity, natural grass had no opportunity to grow nicely.
I thought it was a good and smart idea to put artificial grass in these gardens, only I found the product less suitable. This is because artificial sports grass is designed to play good sports on and not to look like natural grass. I started developing a new type of artificial grass that did resemble natural grass. My thought was that this artificial grass, which was really similar to natural grass, could be a solution for many more people for various reasons.
Over the years, we have constantly refined this artificial grass through various innovations aimed at making it more natural and of better quality. This eventually led to the wonderfully diverse Royal Grass® collection we have now developed: from artificial summery green freshly cut grass, to tall artificial grass beautifully discoloured by the sun. Royal Grass® has a type of grass for every garden that creates garden happiness.”
